White Sox wait out 3-hour rain delay in 10th inning to to beat Cardinals 6-5

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tanner Banks came on after a three-hour rain delay to strike out pinch-hitter Iván Herrera in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5 on Saturday night to snap a four-game losing streak.

Tommy Pham drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the 10th and the White Sox were an out away in the bottom half when crew chief Dan Iassogna stopped play and called out the grounds crew after John Brebbia threw his first pitch to Nolan Gorman.

After the delay of 3 hours, 3 minutes, Banks came on and threw four pitches to get Herrera for his first save of the season.

Nolan Arenado singled to first to lead off the bottom of the 10th, and Alec Burleson reached first base on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Brebbia then struck out Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn, who was batting when the downpour began.

Pham singled to left field off Ryan Fernandez (0-1) to drive in automatic runner Rafael Ortega in the top of the 10th.

Michael Kopech (1-3) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

White Sox reliever Dominic Leone was removed from the game with lower back tightness in the eighth inning after walking Arenado, the only batter he faced.

Korey Lee hit a two-run single to center field off Andrew Kittredge in the sixth inning to the tie the game at 5-all.

Arenado’s second home run of the season put the Cardinals ahead 5-3 after Brendan Donovan snapped an 0-for-11 skid with a two-run double earlier in the fifth inning.

Lance Lynn allowed five runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks in five-plus innings. It was his first appearance against the White Sox since they traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 28, 2023.

Erick Fedde allowed five runs on four hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings for the White Sox, who hadn’t won since sweeping a three-game series against Tampa Bay April 26-28.

TRAINER’S ROOM

White Sox: Placed INF Danny Mendick (lower back tightness) on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 2 and recalled INF Bryan Ramos from Double-A Birmingham. Ramos made his major league debut as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Cardinals: OF Dylan Carlson (left shoulder AC sprain) returned to St. Louis after going three for 11 with a homer in four games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis. Carlson will workout in St. Louis with a strong potential of rain putting Memphis’ weekend games in Charlotte in jeopardy.

UP NEXT:

LHP Garrett Crochet (1-4, 5.97 ERA) will start for the White Sox. The Cardinals have not named a starter after announcing that previously scheduled starter Kyle Gibson will now start on Monday versus the New York Mets.

Bo Naylor hits his 1st career grand slam, Guardians beat Angels 7-1

CLEVELAND (AP) — Bo Naylor hit his first career grand slam, Austin Hedges had his first homer since June 14 and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-1 on Saturday night.

Naylor’s two-out blast in the sixth inning came off Angels starter Reid Detmers (3-3), who had loaded the bases on three walks. The four RBIs were a career high for the third-year catcher.

Hedges, batting .111 on the season, hit a two-run homer in the second. Ramón Laureano added a solo shot in the fourth for the Guardians, who have the second-best record in the American League at 21-12.

Cleveland left fielder Steven Kwan, who leads the AL with a .353 batting average, left the game after the third inning because of left hamstring tightness.

Ben Lively (1-1) went six innings, giving up one run on four hits while striking out five. The right-hander ended a nine-start winless streak that included four losses since beating Kansas City while pitching for Cincinnati on June 14.

The Angels trimmed their deficit to 3-1 in the fifth on a Zach Neto single that plated Jo Adell, but Ehire Adrianza flew out with the bases loaded to end the threat. Neto and Adell each had stolen bases in the inning.

Detmers allowed season highs of seven runs and three homers in 5 2/3 innings. Catcher Logan O’Hoppe exited in the fifth with a right hand contusion.

Los Angeles has not won consecutive games — or a series — in Cleveland since 2013, losing 24 of its last 27 at Progressive Field. The Angels beat the Guardians 6-0 in the three-game series opener.

Hedges had gone 110 plate appearances since homering as a member of the Pirates. He finished last year with the World Series champion Rangers before rejoining Cleveland as a free agent.

Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor, mired in a 4-for-33 slump, was given the night off. Cleveland is in the midst of a stretch of 16 games in 16 days that ends on May 15.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Angels: 2B Luis Rengifo (illness) was held out of the lineup with a high fever after falling ill Friday. Rengifo has the fourth-highest batting average in the AL at .330 and is tied for second with nine stolen bases.

Guardians: LHP Sam Hentges (left middle finger inflammation), who has been on the injured list since March 25, has not allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings over four rehab appearances with Triple-A Columbus.

UP NEXT

Angels RHP Griffin Canning (1-3, 7.45 ERA) faces Guardians RHP Carlos Carrasco (1-2, 6.59 ERA) in the series finale Sunday.

Recovering from knee surgery, Finch in 2nd row of Timberwolves bench for series opener with Nuggets

DENVER (AP) — Minnesota coach Chris Finch was in the second row of the bench when the Timberwolves opened their second-round series at Denver on Saturday after having knee surgery this week.

Although Finch was present, assistant coach Micah Nori roamed the Wolves’ sideline, instructing the players and calling the timeouts against the reigning champion Nuggets.

Finch used crutches to attend his pregame news conference, where he said he and his knee felt “pretty good, all things considered.”

Finch had his ruptured right patellar tendon repaired Wednesday after a sideline collision with Mike Conley late in the Game 4 win at Phoenix that gave the Timberwolves a series sweep in Round 1.

The thought was Finch would watch the action in a suite if there wasn’t enough space for him on the sideline to safely extend his leg. But the Wolves configured their seats to allow him to be close by. His knee was guarded by the end of the scorer’s table. There was an empty chair next to him.

“I’ll be on the bench but the game interaction and the game flow will be largely run by Micah,” Finch explained. “Obviously, I’m not in a position to be able to get up, call timeouts, interact with the players, that kind of stuff. Being right there with the coaches and with the players in the huddle, that stuff will be the same.”

Finch installed Minnesota’s game plan for the Nuggets before undergoing surgery.

These teams know each other well, with front-office executive Tim Connelly helping build the Nuggets before leaving in 2022 for a similar job with Minnesota. Finch and Nori were once on the staff of Nuggets coach Michael Malone, as well. Timberwolves guard Monte Morris was drafted by Denver in 2017 and spent five seasons with the Nuggets, while Denver assistant Ryan Saunders served as the head coach of the Timberwolves over parts of three seasons.

“I guess it’s cool, doesn’t really matter to me,” Malone said of the familiarity between the teams. “Whether it’s people we know or don’t know, once that jump ball goes up, they’re in our way, and we’re in their way.

“Chris Finch, who I believe is going to be — I can’t wait to see this — on the sideline in some capacity tonight, he was on my staff briefly. … Yes, there’s a lot of guys (with connections) but all that goes out the window when the jump ball goes up, man. This is about competition at its highest form.”

Gausman tosses 5 1/3 scoreless innings, Kiermaier homers and Blue Jays beat Nationals 6-3

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kevin Gausman pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer in his return from the injured list and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak.

Gausman (2-3) allowed three hits while striking out eight. He walked two batters in the first inning, but settled in and later retired 10 straight — seven by strikeout — before leaving after Luis García Jr.’s one-out single in the sixth after 112 pitches.

“Not very efficient to be honest,” Gausman said. “Too many deep counts. But I went into this game kind of knowing I was going to need to go deep and that they might push me a little bit, so I was fine with that.”

Gausman has given up two earned runs in 24 innings while striking out 21 with five walks over his last four starts.

Danny Jansen and Daulton Varsho each had two hits for the Blue Jays, who had lost eight of 11. Kiermaier returned after missing nine games with left hip flexor inflammation and connected off Derek Law in the eighth inning for his first homer of the season.

“Welcome back KK,” manager John Schneider said. “Nice add-on there at the end.”

CJ Abrams and García had two hits each for the Nationals, who had won six of eight and missed a chance to go above .500 for the first time since July 1, 2021, when they were 40-39.

Washington starter Jake Irvin (2-3) allowed four unearned runs on five hits over five innings.

Toronto’s Bo Bichette was ejected by home plate umpire Jonathan Parra after slamming his helmet to the ground when he was called out on strikes on a borderline 3-2 pitch in the fifth.

“I thought it was a little early to be honest with you,” Schneider said. “You’ve seen equipment violations before an ejection and Jonathan’s thought was that it was a little bit much. Kind of tough to argue that, but yeah, I think that for a guy’s first ejection probably could have been a little bit of grace there given.”

Trailing 4-0, Washington loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Abrams hit a drive to center that was caught by Kiermaier on the warning track for a sacrifice fly and Nick Senzel followed with an RBI single.

Schneider shook up his lineup — including moving Varsho up to the number two spot and Bichette down to number five. Bichette was 1 for 3 before his ejection, raising his average to .202.

“If that’s what we think is the best option for us scoring runs, I’m willing to do whatever,” Bichette said. “We’ve got get going and I haven’t done much to contribute, so whatever they want.”

Washington’s defense played a major role in the Blue Jays start.

The Nationals sandwiched two throwing errors around another bad throw that erased the second out of a potential double play as the Blue Jays scored four unearned runs in the first. Two runs scored when first baseman Trey Lipscomb threw the ball into left field on Daniel Vogelbach’s bases-loaded grounder, and Jansen capped the inning with an RBI double.

“First inning was not good,” manager Davey Martinez said. “We couldn’t throw the ball to first base. So just one of those days, right? The weather was not good, but we should have made those plays.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Blue Jays: Schneider said RHP Alek Manoah (right shoulder soreness) will be reinstated and make his 2024 debut when he starts the series finale on Sunday. He has not pitched in the majors since Aug. 10.

Nationals: RHP Josiah Gray (right elbow) threw a bullpen session Saturday. Manager Dave Martinez said Gray felt good after throwing 30-35 pitches and his next bullpen will happen Tuesday or Wednesday.

UP NEXT

Manoah will face LHP MacKenzie Gore (2-3, 3.19), who is averaging 11.03 strikeouts per nine innings.

Jared Jones dazzles, Jack Suwinski provides walk-off single as Pirates edge Rockies 1-0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pinch-hitter Jack Suwinski singled home Connor Joe with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.

Joe led off the ninth against Nick Mears (0-3) with a single and eventually moved to third after walks to Jared Triolo and Oneil Cruz. Suwinski snapped an 0-for-12 skid by dropping a single into left as the Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak.

“Good at-bat, line drive through the middle, something we obviously needed a little bit,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “Just very good for our whole group.”

Jared Jones, Colin Holderman and David Bednar (2-2) combined for a one-hitter as the Pirates won for just the fourth time in their last 18 games. The Rockies managed just one baserunner, a double by Elias Diaz leading off the fifth.

“I’m just going out there and doing me,” Jones said after dropping his ERA to 2.63. “I’m sure I’ve had some spurts in my career where I’ve pitched just like this.”

The 22-year-old Jones has been a revelation during the season’s opening weeks, dominating opponents with a fastball that can reach triple digits offset by a slider and change-up that can leave opponents guessing.

The right-hander baffled the Rockies, retiring the first 12 batters he faced before Díaz laced a clean double to the left-field corner. A strikeout and a pair of balls that didn’t leave the infield later, Jones was jogging back to the dugout.

The Pirates have been careful with Jones in hopes of protecting his right arm. Shelton raised eyebrows when he lifted Jones after five innings and 59 pitches (50 of them strikes) against the New York Mets last month.

There was no early exit this time around. Jones went back out for the seventh for the first time in his career and navigated the middle of Colorado’s lineup with ease, receiving a loud ovation when he retired the Rockies in order and headed to the dugout after throwing a season-high 96 pitches. Jones struck out 10 without a walk.

“I’ve had a short leash before, and that was to protect me,” Jones said. “Having him let me go out for the seventh, yeah, it pumped me up.”

Colorado starter Austin Gomber wasn’t quite as dazzling but matched Jones while throwing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits against two walks and three strikeouts. The Rockies, off to a franchise-worst 8-25 start, have yet to win consecutive games this season.

No runner for either team reached third base through the first eight innings, a byproduct of two pitchers who had it going and offenses that have struggled to generate much of anything until Suwinski came through in the ninth.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Rockies: OF Nolan Jones (low back strain) did some running and throwing on the field at PNC Park before the game. There remains no timetable for a return for Jones, who was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 29. … 1B Kris Bryant (low back strain) is doing some “baseball stuff” according to manager Bud Black, though Black did not offer specifics. Bryant has been out since April 13.

UP NEXT

The series wraps up on Sunday. Bailey Falter (2-2, 4.22 ERA) starts for Pittsburgh against Colorado’s Ryan Feltner (1-2, 5.13).

Cubs hit three home runs and stifle late Brewers rally in series-tying 6-5 win

CHICAGO (AP) — Nico Hoerner hit his first career lead-off home run, Christopher Morel hit his third homer in as many games and Patrick Wisdom sent one into the stands as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Saturday.

“Our offense has been a little quiet lately obviously,” said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. “Christopher’s in a stretch right now. The homers, I think for most guys, come in bunches, and he’s had a good week.”

Chicago tied its first divisional series of the year at one apiece in Counsell’s first series against his former team. Brewers manager Pat Murphy also returned to the dugout after serving a two-game suspension for his role in a brawl with Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Milwaukee came within one twice late in the game. When Chicago’s Keegan Thompson replaced starter Jameson Taillon (3-0), up 4-0 after six strong innings, he walked Rhys Hoskins. Then Oliver Dunn hit a triple that sent Hoskins home. Blake Perkins homered the next at-bat.

Jackson Chourio singled before Counsell brought in Mark Leiter Jr. Sal Frelick then doubled on a ground ball to Mike Tauchman who tossed Dansby Swanson a tough throw he couldn’t collect. Chourio rounded the bases on the error, making the score 4-5.

Leiter cleaned it up in the eighth and Wisdom hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning that sent Michael Busch home from third.

“I just shortened up the swing, wanted to put something in the middle of the field, and I was able to put the bat on the ball there in a big spot,” Wisdom said. “Every run is important but especially late in the game.”

Héctor Neris came in to pitch the ninth inning and walked Blake Perkins. An RBI single by William Contreras scored Perkins to bring the score within one again. With the winning run on second, Tyler Black grounded into a forceout to end the game, sealing Neris’ sixth save of the season.

“He’s been in every big spot, he’s had the bases loaded, he’s pitched on the road in tough spots, he’s pitched in the playoffs,” Taillon said of Neris. “He’s confident, and there’s definitely no panic.”

Taillon gave up two hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings. The righty has now allowed one earned run or fewer in four straight starts.

“He’s really in control and his command is excellent,” Counsell said. “I thought he did a wonderful job with the running game today, and just executing multiple pitches.”

Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers (0-2) allowed four runs on three hits and walked four over three innings for the loss.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Cubs: CF Cody Bellinger and RF Seiya Suzuki participated in hitting and defensive drills pregame, and Counsell said returns from the 10-day injured list next week are “realistic” for them both. Bellinger sustained two fractured ribs trying to make a catch into Wrigley Field’s brick wall April 24, while Suzuki suffered a right oblique strain running out a ground ball to first on April 14. “They’re both largely in the same spot,” Counsell said. “I think we’ve got a chance to be without a rehab assignment. It’s likely Seiya does one, a very short one. I think Bellinger, maybe not.”

Brewers: LF Joey Wiemer was placed on the 10-day IL with knee discomfort. Wiemer exited Friday’s game against the Cubs after injuring his left knee trying to catch a ball in left field.

UP NEXT

RHP Javier Assad (2-0, 1.97 ERA) will take the mound Sunday for the Cubs in search of his first win since April 14 against Seattle. The Brewers will start RHP Freddy Peralta (3-0, 3.21), who has appealed a five-game suspension he received for his role in Milwaukee’s brawl against the Rays on Tuesday. Peralta is permitted to play as long as the appeal process isn’t completed before his scheduled appearance.

Pablo López strikes out 8 in 6 innings as Twins beat Red Sox 3-1 for 12th straight victory

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Pablo López struck out eight in six strong innings, Max Kepler homered and the Minnesota Twins extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 3-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday.

The Twins have the longest winning streak in the majors this season. Minnesota’s run matches the team’s winning streak from late in the 1980 season, which is the second-longest in Twins history. The club record for consecutive wins in 15, from June 1991, which is the last season Minnesota won the World Series.

“It’s been fun, and I think you are not seeing guys try to do more than we know what to do. That’s always the biggest thing,” López said.

Kepler and Willi Castro each had two hits, Carlos Correa had two RBIs. Closer Jhoan Duran pitched a scoreless eighth inning against the middle of the Red Sox order, and Cole Sands pitched a scoreless final inning for his second save.

“From the outside, people probably wouldn’t have guessed it would be Cole closing it there,” reliever Steven Okert said. “Coaching staff having confidence in all of us is great.”

Wilyer Abreu and Dominic Smith had two hits apiece for Boston, which has lost three straight games.

Kepler homered off Cam Booser (0-1) in the fourth inning. Booser was the third of five pitchers used in a bullpen game.

Castro singled leading off the sixth, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches by Justin Slaten and scored on a sacrifice fly by Correa for a 3-1 lead.

Briefly tended to by trainers after covering first base in the second inning and bumping into the runner after he touched the bag, López allowed five hits and struck out seven of the last 12 hitters he faced.

“To really bunch a bunch of good games together, you need guys to just take the mound and lead the way. And Pablo was excellent today,” manager Rocco Baldelli said.

“No one wants to be the guy that makes the streak stop in any way, shape or form. I think I just took advantage of the momentum, the good thing that we have going on and I kind of let it take over me and then just let things flow,” López said.

López struck out Rafael Devers on a high fastball with a tying run on third to end the fifth. Devers, who stared at home plate umpire Lance Barksdale for several seconds after a called second strike two pitches earlier, slammed his helmet in disgust.

“That’s part of the game of course, when you go out there, to work out an at-bat and you get one called a strike inside like that, it gets you out of your gameplan. You have to keep battling in that at-bat. You have to keep fighting,” Devers said through an interpreter.

Devers struck out against Okert with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh. This time the bat got spiked.

Boston has gone six straight games without a home run, its longest streak since six in a row April 23-28, 2022.

Smith nearly ended that streak leading off the seventh, but his line drive hit high off the wall in right field. The carom was played perfectly by Kepler, who fired a strike to Correa at second. Seeing he was easily out Smith didn’t bother sliding.

“We have put some good at-bats, sometimes some good pressure, but not enough,” manager Alex Cora said.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Red Sox: 2B Vaughn Grissom did not play Saturday, one day after he returned from the 10-day injured list (hamstring). The plan is for him to start Sunday and both upcoming games in Atlanta. … Nick Pivetta, on the 15-day disabled list since April 6 with a right elbow flexor strain, is expected to be activated for a Wednesday start in Atlanta. He made a Triple-A rehab start Thursday.

UP NEXT

The teams wrap up the three-game series Sunday with Boston RHP Cooper Criswell (2-1, 1.65) and Minnesota RHP Joe Ryan (1-1, 3.38) the scheduled starters.

Aaron Judge tossed for 1st time, Rizzo hits 3-run homer as Yankees top Tigers 5-3

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge was ejected for the first time in his career in the seventh inning, Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run third and the New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Saturday.

Judge had two hits, including an RBI double to start New York’s rally in the third before getting ejected by plate umpire Ryan Blakney for arguing a called third strike. Judge thought a full count fastball by Tyler Holton was slightly outside and he was quickly tossed after looking back at Blakney.

“I was very surprised,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Judge, he says very little usually very respectfully walking away. Come on man.”

Judge became the first Yankee captain to get tossed since Don Mattingly on May 13, 1994, in Milwaukee.

“I got a lot of respect for Ryan and what he does. I know their job’s tough. I’ve always had their back because it’s tough back there. So for that to happen that way, that’s what I’m most upset about, especially late in the game like that.”

Rizzo followed up his game-winning single by hitting a drive off Casey Mize (1-1) that banked off the side facing of the second deck in right field and caromed into the “Judge’s Chambers” to give New York a 5-1 lead. It was Rizzo’s fifth homer in his last 12 games since April 23.

“Looked like Mize got it in there and he just put a better swing on it,” Boone said. “Really got into it and obviously that’s the difference in the game right there.”

Giancarlo Stanton hit an RBI single in the first when the Yankees got three straight two-out hits.

The Yankees won their second straight after dropping three of four in Baltimore when they scored six runs.

Riley Greene hit his second career leadoff homer on Clarke Schmidt’s third pitch of the game. Matt Vierling hit an RBI triple and scored on rookie Colt Keith’s sacrifice fly in the fourth but the Tigers dropped to 1-10 in their last 11 trips to the Bronx.

Schmidt (3-1) allowed a leadoff homer for the second straight start and gave up three runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out seven, walked none and pitched with runners on in four innings.

Luke Weaver retired slumping Spencer Torkelson with two on to strand two in the sixth and pitched 2 1/3 innings. Clay Holmes got the final four outs for his 11th save.

Mize allowed five runs and a career-high tying nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. It was only the fourth time in the last 18 games a Detroit starter allowed more than two earned runs.

“I threw it exactly where we were trying to,” Mize said of the pitch to Rizzo. “It’s just he was just looking for it and he handles that pitch.”

DROPPED

Torkelson was dropped to seventh for the first time this season and was 0 for 4, lowering his batting average to .205. Torkelson struck out twice and is in a 6-for-44 skid over his last 11 games.

“He’s gotta fight his way out of it and he will,” Tigers manager AJ Hinch said. “When you go through it it feels like it’s endless.”

TRAINER’S ROOM

Tigers: Greene was plunked near the ribs in the fifth but stayed in after being checked out for a few minutes.

Yankees: RHP Gerrit Cole (elbow inflammation) threw 15 fastballs in his first bullpen session since getting injured in spring training. Cole is not expected to return until at least June. … INF Jon Berti was activated off the injured list after missing 21 games. … OF Taylor Trammell was designated for assignment.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge ejected for first time in his career

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge’s first career ejection happened so quickly that he did not even see it.

Judge was ejected for the first time in his career when he briefly argued a called third strike by plate umpire Ryan Blakney in the seventh inning of the Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

With one out, Judge took a full count fastball from Tyler Holton that he thought was slightly outside. Blakney rang him up and Judge briefly glanced back.

After starting to walk back to the dugout, Judge returned to argue the call after being tossed by Blakney. Manager Aaron Boone came out of the dugout to discuss the ejection with Blakney and was not tossed.

“I didn’t even see myself get tossed,” Judge said. “It was kind of the crowd reaction. I kind of assumed at that point.”

Boone said he was very surprised.

“Judge, he says very little usually very respectfully walking away,” Boone said. “Come on man.”

Unlike the April 22 ejection of Boone by plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt, there was not any clear audio on the YES Network of the exchange.

Crew chief Alan Porter, who was the third-base umpire, spoke to a pool reporter and did not know exactly what was said by Judge, who declined to disclose what was said.

“Apparently Aaron did not agree with the pitch and said something that you shouldn’t have said and he was ejected,” Porter said. “We do what we can to keep guys in the game but said something he shouldn’t have said.”

Since Derek Jeter was never ejected in his 20-year career, Judge became the first Yankee captain to get tossed since Don Mattingly on May 13, 1994, in Milwaukee.

“I got a lot of respect for Ryan and what he does,” Judge said. “I know their job’s tough. I’ve always had their back because it’s tough back there. So for that to happen that way, that’s what I’m most upset about, especially late in the game like that.”

Yankees first baseman Anthony Rizzo said Judge was “obviously disappointed in the call,” but he didn’t think Judge was “showing up the umpire.”

“I thought that was pretty quick,” he said.

Judge hit a single and an RBI double in his first two at-bats. He is hitting .209 this season and stopped an 0-for-14 skid with a single to start New York’s winning rally in the ninth inning on Friday’s win.

After Judge was ejected, many in the crowd begin chanting profanely at Blakney.
